We Must Make Jesus Our #1 Priority
1. MUST COUNT THE COST
Luke 14:28 LB 28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if he has enough money to pay the bills?
– Life is about counting the cost. We must count the cost with an open mind and spirit.
As we see the soon coming of Jesus our motivation should be the kingdom of God!
– God wants His disciple to making counting the cost a part of their daily lifestyle.
Romans 8:18LB 18 Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will give us later.
Many disciples want a great measure of anointing. The want God to use them mightily, but never imagine the cost involved.
Matthew 16:26 LB 26 What profit is there if you gain the whole world—and lose eternal life? What can be compared with the value of eternal life?
When we count the cost, it will help us to stop making commitments and then God.
– There is so much unfinished work in God’s kingdom because disciples do not count the cost.
Ask yourself these questions:
What cost have I counted since I came to the Lord?
Does my worship cost me anything?
2. MUST NOT CLING ON EARTHLY POSSESSIONS
Luke 14:33 NLT 33 So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.
– We live in a world that is possession hungry. The world has made life all about what a person can obtain. The world has used possessions to determine and define one’s worth.
The more possessions one has, the more power and influence that person has.
– This mentality has made its way into the church of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 24:35 NIV 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Anything that not based on the word of God is temporary and will pass away.
– Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving!
Luke 18:18-22 NLT
18 Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. 20 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.”
21 The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” 22 When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
There is nothing wrong with possessions, but possessions that consume the focus can be a hindrance.
– Often, we live above our means and must work harder and longer to maintain our possessions.
Christians often make work an excuse for not being committed to the ministry of Jesus Christ.
Ask yourself these questions:
– What possessions in my life have a bigger hold on me than Jesus?
What possessions do I want? Now compare them to what I need.
– Can I release my passions in order to fulfill God’s greater plan?
